Notes |
- Francisco Alves was born and raised on the island of Terceira in Azores, Portugal. He was one of six children, the oldest boy, who had little choice but to step up and help his mother raise the family when his father died when he was a teenager.
"He worked with cattle to help his mom feed the other kids," said his niece Mary Joe Freire of Kitchener.
When he came to Canada with his wife and three sons, just like many Portuguese families, they settled in Cambridge. He worked decades at Crowe Foundry and retired at 65.
"He was a humble and kind man. He was a hardworking man," Freire said.
"He devoted his younger years to ensuring his mother and siblings were able to have food on the table," Friere said.
Alves, who lived at Forest Heights for four years, was visited daily by two of those sisters who never forgot how hard their brother worked for them. His sisters last saw him on March 11.
Alves, who tested positive for COVID-19, had a spiking fever and was on oxygen when he died on April 22.
