BADEN-Sept. 26 -- Joseph Hofele, 84 years old and Baden's oldest resident died at his home here last night. Mr Hofele who boasted never having been sick enough in his life to require medical attention was ill only one week. Born in Buffalo in 1853, he came to Canada with his parents when two years old to live in Preston. From Preston he moved to Baden where he resided for over 80 years. At ten years of age he began a seven-year apprenticeship in the laundry business under the father of Sir Adam Beck. Following this he worked as a moulder with Sir Adam Beck as o n e of the apprentices. For the 60 years preceding his retirement six years ago he was in charge of the Baden foundry. As a youth he stoked the engine running an oil drill, the only alleged attempt at "wildcattin" ever made in Baden. Mr. Hofele married Elisabeth Linker Jan. 2, 1877, who survives. Last year the couple celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary. Surviving are his widow, one daughter, Mrs. Louisa Weiler, Baden, one son Edward of Detroit and two brothers, Stephen and John and one sister, Mrs. Ann Scheifele. The funeral will be private at the residence to Baden and public at the Presbyterian church on Wednesday at 2.30. Interment will be made in Fairmount Cemetery. Rev. H. Erdman will be in charge at the services.
