      Mathias Michels was born in Prussia, Germany the son of John Michaelis and Margaret (Gayner) Michaelis. He travelled to Canada at an early age with his mother Margaret and he married Barbara A. Eby there who was born in Pennsylvania in 1824. They married sometime before 1840 when their first child Absolom was born in Canada. In 1840 Mathias would have been 18 and Barbara 16. While in Canada they lived in Hay Township, Huron County, Ontario. Sometime after immigrating to the United States in 1859 their name was spelled Michaels which standardized as Michels in Bangor, Geneva Township, Van Buren, Michigan as evidenced by the spelling of the name on his headstone. They had a total of fourteen natural born and one adopted child. The first nine children were born in Canada and the remainder born in Michigan. The Canadian census of 1851 listed their name as Michaelis and his mother Margaret was 67 years old at the time. In 1860 they were living in Lynn Township, St Clair County, Michigan, and in 1862 they were living in Bangor, Geneva Township, Van Buren County, Michigan. The children were Absolom Michels born 1840 in Canada, William Henry Michels born 1844 in Canada, George Michels born 1847 in Canada, John Michels born 1848 in Canada, Sebastian Michels born 1850 in Canada, Elizabeth Michels born 1852 in Canada, Sarah A. Michels born 1854 in Canada, Margaret Michels born 1856 in Canada, twins Harriet and Isabell Michels were born 1859 in Canada, Mary Michels born 1860 in Lynn Township St Clair County, Michigan, Mathias Benjamin Michels born 1862 in Bangor, Van Buren County, Michigan, Alma Louise Michels born 1866 in Bangor, Van Buren County, Michigan, Addison F. Michels was born 6 December 1868 in Bangor, Van Buren County, Michigan and Frank Michels who was born in 1873. and adopted by Mathias and Barbara. During the Civil War, Mathias served in the Grand Army of the Republic with B Company, 1st Michigan Cavalry and applied for a pension on February 21, 1882. He died in 1899 and was buried in the Taylor Cemetery.
