    • Served 23 Years, Retiring From RCAF

      Sqdn Ldr. Robert J. Brown, a Baden native who took his secondary education here, is retiring from the RCAF after 23 years continuous service. The Sqn Ldr. was the captain of a Liberator bomber which sank four Japanese warships during the battle of the Pacific in 1945.

      Sqn Ldr. Brown joined the RCAF in 1940 and served in the West Indies and Ceylon. On his return to Canada he changed from Liberators to North Stars and flew with 426 Squadron from. 1946 to 1952.

      In 1952 he moved to Air Transport Command headquarters as staff officer organization. In 1954 he attended the Canadian Army Staff College and after graduating in 1955 he was transferred to Air Force Headquaters where he served until 1959 with the directorate of management engineering. He was then moved to Air Transport Command headquarters at Trenton where be served as staff officer, management engineering, until his retirement. He is married to the former Margaret Helen Cheyne of Kitchener. They have four children. Sandra Ann 20, Susan Lee 15, Grant William 13, and Barbara Helen 8.

      The Brown family will be returning to Kitchener. Mr. Brown plans on entering the business world.

      Retiring Officers Receive Gifts Of Silver

      Gifts of silver were presented to four officers on their retirement from the RCAF, at a dinner held in the officers mess at Station Trenton Tuesday. Gifts were presented to each officer by the air officer commanding Air Transport Command, Air Commodore R. J. Lane.

      Retiring were Squadron Leader James R. Johnson, Squadron Leader R. J. Bob Brown, Squadron Leader George J. Moir, and Flight Lieutenant Everett Gowsell. The commanding officer of RCAF Station Trenton, Group Captain E. M. Butcher, was present for the occasion.

      Squadron Leader James R. Johnson, DFC, AFC, Omemee and Toronto, was formerly a pilot. He has been staff officer of flight safety at Air Transport Command. He joined the RCAF in 1941.

      Squadron Leader R. J. Brown, Baden, Ontario, was staff officer of management engineering at ATC headquarters. He joined the RCAF in September 1940. Squadron Leader George J. Moir, CD, Winnipeg and Glasgow, was air cadet liaison officer at ATC headquarters. He has been with the RCAF since June 1941.

      Flight Lieutenant Everett Gowsell, MBE, CD, has been with the Air Force since July. 1936. He was formerly ATC staff officer of aeronautical engineering. He was also manager of the Trenton Flying Club, and is a past president of the Quinte Curling Club.
