Leading New Hamburg Citizen Had Active And Varied Career

NEW HAMBURG, Dec. 27-New Hamburg's "grand old man," David Eby, B4, died at the K-W Hospital Christmas night. He was taken to the hospital last Wednesday. He had been alling for the past year with a throat allment.
A son of Mennonite parents. the late Mr. and Mrs. David Eby, Mr. Eby was born in St. Jacobs His forefathers were amongst the early white settlers of this district, Mr. Eby's grandfather coming to Canada from from Pennsylvania with his parents in 1804.
At the age of 17 Mr. Eby finished public school and entered high school at Berlin (now Kitchener) and there obtained his professionel teaching certificate. He taught at SS. 16, Wilmot, a mile northeast of Baden for four years. He then learned the carpenter trade and moved to New Hamburg 54 years ago.
MANAGED FLOUR MILL
He was employed with several firms here and while with the Hahn Furniture Company became clerk of the division court, which interfered with his work and he entered the employ of the late I. M. Clemens who operated the flour mill and later took over the office managment of this concern until it was destroyed by fire in 1902.
He then took over the office management of the New Hamburg Manufacturing Company, at that time New Hamburg's largest factory. He was with this firm until it entered bankruptcy which was attributed to German sabotage during the First Great War. While with this firm ge was made public.
When the income tax came into effect in the First Great War he opened an office and became an expert on this work. After the war he took over the office management of the largest store here, at that time operated by D. and H. Becker. Later he again opened an office and conducted a successfull business until about six years ago when he retired.
HEADED LOCAL LODGES
He was married in 1885 to Susanah Hesee who preceased hime several years ago. Since that time he has made his home with his nephew, V. J. Hesse. He was active in fraternal and church work in an executive capacity in all New Hamburg sporting circles. He was a member of the Evangelcal Church choir for years and a Sunday school teacher.
In lodge work past master of the A.F. and A.M. and in 1939 served as grand steward in the Grand Lodge of Ontario in this order. He was a past grand of the LO. O.F. and a past chief ranger of the COF.
Surviving are four brothers and two sisters, Daniel of Wilmot, Enoch of Galt, Hiram of Kitchener, Aaron of Tavistock and Mrs. Gideon Boshart and Miss Barbara Eby of Wilmot.
The funeral will be from the home of V. J. Hesse tomorrow afterhome of ternoon at 2 o'clock with services at the Evangelical Church at 2:30. Burial will be made in Riverside Cemetery. Rev. J. B. Dengis will be in charge. The remains are resting at the home of V. J. Hesse.
