  Henry F. Eby, "was born in Berlin, Ontario, September 12th, 1842, and now resides in Nappanee, Indiana, where he carries on the painting business. He is married to Elizabeth Schabach and has one child, name of which is not known to the writer." Eby, Ezra E. (1895). WAS FIRST STATION AGENT Served Term as Postmaster at Nappanee During Cleveland's Administration. Henry F. Eby, aged 78 years 10 months and 6 days. One of the oldest and best known citizens of Nappanee, died Monday morning at 9: 15 o'clock at his home on E. Market Street, after a short illness. Mr. Eby, who was born in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, on September 12, 1842 was brought to this country in 1857 by his parents, John W. and Veronica Eby, who settled in the Jones school house district near the southwest portion of Concord township. The parents, both natives of Pennsylvania, had spent a part of their career in Canada. Mr. Eby in young manhood resided at Locke for some time, a town that was laid out in 1867 by his brother George Eby, and others, and he remained there some time after there was an exodus to Nappanee, following this town's establishment in 1875-6. However, he also became a resident of this growing community. WAS FIRST FREIGHT AGENT. Mr. Eby was the first B.&O. freight agent in Nappanee, when the Town was called Locke. His office was in an old freight car. He was afterwards engaged in the furniture and undertaking business for some time. NAMED NAPPANEE. With his brother, George Eby, he was instrumental in naming the town of Nappanee. Before a name was selected for this station by the B.&O. railroad, many wished to have the name of West Locke used. Mr. Eby and his brother had come from Nappanee, Canada, and they were influential in having this name chosen. This is a historical fact that will be of interest to many who have resided here but a few years and probably often wondered from where the town derived it name. APPOINTED POSTMASTER BY CLEVELAND. During Cleveland's administration he was appointed postmaster, a postion he filled very acceptably for three and one-half years. Practically all the time since, until a short time before his death, he was employed by local industries as a cabinet maker and carver. He was united in marriage with Miss Elizabeth Slabaugh, at Locke, in April 1865. She died about thirty-five years ago. Prior to her death they had moved to Nappanee. During his term as postmaster he was united in marriage with Mrs. Mary Helman. To this union were born three daughters, Eunice, Lula and Ethel. He is survivied by his wife, two daughters, Mrs. W. W. Kinney and Miss Lula; two step sons, Oliver and Charles E. Helman of Elkhart; also the family of a deceased step daughter, Mrs. Hugh Brevler; one sister, Mrs. Philip Cress of Philips, Wis., and one half brother, Moses Eby of Brampton, Ont., and many other relatives. Early in life he became a member of the United Bretheren Church and about fifteen years ago untied with the St. John's Lutheren Church of Nappanee, in which he was a faithful worker until his death. Funeral services were held from St. John's Lutheren Church, Tuesday afternoon at 3: 30 o'clock, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Wm. Boatman.
