      Animal Lover Passes Away in His 56th Year

      One of Guelph's most prominent citizens in many fields, suddenly, at St. Joseph's Hospital, on Thursday evening, June 30, 1949, of 86 Yarmouth St. in Guelph. Husband of Roberta Hastings, daughter of the late George D. Hastings, a former assessor and tax-collector and Mary Ellen Bathgate. Father of Olive (Mrs. Charles Seifert) of Hespeler; Muriel of Guelph; George Ross of Guelph; Jean (Mrs. Irvine Skerritt) of Kitchener; Donald Stuart of Guelph; Frances (Mrs. William Stafford) and Patricia, both of Guelph. Also survived by four brothers, Samuel, C. W. and Oswald J. , all of Guelph; Walter of Saskatoon; two sisters, Mrs. Frank Barber and Mrs. Ada Irving, both of Guelph. Mr. Barber was a member of the Speed Lodge and of the Scottish Rite. He had been director of the Ontario Motor League for twenty-five years and was a member of Guelph's first Chamber of Commerce. He was a great lover of animal and bird life. His hobby was Barber's Beach, which he developed into one of the most popular parks in this area. He was president of the Guelph Coach and Body Co. He had been owner of the Barber Signs and Glass Co. for several years. Mr. Barber was the son of the late R. H. Barber and Elizabeth Anne Golding. He was educated at Central School and G. C. V. I. . He was a member of St. James' Anglican Church. Funeral service at the Tovell Funeral Home on Monday at 3, conducted by Rev. E. Brillinger of St. James' Anglican Church. Pallbearers: R. O. Barber, Charles Barber, Alex Barber, Henry Freeman and Cecil Irving, all of Guelph; and R. R. Barber of Hespeler. Mourners were present from Toronto, Hamilton, Kitchener, Galt, Hespeler, Fergus and Michigan. Interment Woodlawn Cemetery.
