Pair Still Prefer Horse, Buggy After 50 Years

      By Record Correspondent

PRESTON It was warm and sunny day 50 years ago today when Melissa Snyder of Bloomingdale became the bride of Mr. William S. Wiegand of Centreville. The wedding took place at Bloomingdale United Church, with Rev. R. H. Ibbitt officiating.

Mrs. Wiegand is the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Snyder of Bloomingdale, and Mr. Wiegand is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wiegand of Centreville.

Mr. and Mrs. Wiegand came to their present home on Highway 8 by horse and buggy 50 years ago. Mr. Wiegand has never used any other transportation.

      DOES OWN HOUSEWORK

Mrs. Wiegand still does her own housework. One of her hobbies is painting.

Mr. Wiegand makes the frames from old frames bought at auction sales. Mrs. Wiegand also works at making mats and beautiful quilts.

She is a life member in the Women's Missionary Society of Freeport United Church.

Mrs. Weigand came from a family of 10.

Still living are Fernando Snyder of Stratford and Miss Alice Snyder, living with Mrs. Wiegand.

Mr. Wiegand has been inspector for the Humane Society for 34 years.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Wiegand are members of the Preston Horticultural Society and Mr. Wiegand served as president for seven years and Mrs. Wiegand was a director.

Mr. Wiegand has been superintendent of the Freeport United Church Sunday school for 50 years.

Mr. Wiegand came from a family of nine. Still living are a brother, George, of Kitchener, and two sisters, Mrs. R. Matchenbacher, Klamath Falls, Ore., and Mrs. George Jardine of Port Huron.

      HAD FOUR CHILDREN

Mr. and Mrs. Wiegand had four children, two of whom are surviving, Douglas of Preston and Eden of Welland. There are also four grandchildren.

A reception was held at their home on Sunday with approximately 100 guests. Refreshments were served from a table beautiful with a lace cloth, candelabra, silver appointments and centred with a lovely bouquet of gold roses.

Mrs. Clayton Eby of Freeport and Miss Pearl Bracey, who was one of Mrs. Wiegand's bridesmaids, poured tea. The beautiful wedding cake was displayed on the buffet, flanked by bouquets of spring.
