Twelve-year-old Harold Rumig end his sister, Eileen, age eight, were struck down and instantly killed by a taxicab as they walked within a few yards of their home, near here. Saturday afternoon.
The accident occurred on the Bridgeport Road, about half way between Waterloo and Bridgeport. The children's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius Rumig. who survive, along with four sisters and three brothers.
Provincial Constable Edward Mitchener, who investigated, said today Harry "Chummy" Hartleib, driver of the car is charged with motor manslaughter. The taxi is owned by Miller's Taxi Co., of Waterloo.
According to police, the two children were walking on the proper side of the highway. The taxi coming up behind them on the opposite side of the highway, apparently skidded right across the road, struck the children and careened into the ditch, coming to rest upside down, against a tree. Hartleib told police the car skidded on ice and he was unable to control it.
Deaths of the two children. brought the total of children killed in traffic accidents in or near the Twin City to six within the past
four months. Funeral services were held on Tuesday morning.
