    • Marie Marcella (Schell) Burkhart
      August 27, 1929 - July 25, 2016

One of Marie's favourite sayings was "Life is too short to spend being unhappy." She was a great role model for this wisdom.

Born in Ontario, Marie was adopted as a young child, and raised on a farm in Maryhill, Ontario, the oldest of six children.

When she was 20, she married Alan Burkhart, and several years later they moved with their three young children to Edmonton. The family then spent five years in northern Alberta, where Alan built hospitals and schools and Marie cared for the family in a small trailer with no running water. In 1958 they returned to Edmonton and bought their first home, where the family grew to include three more daughters. In 1967 they moved to Regina, where Marie lived for the rest of her life.
While the children were growing up, Marie tended a large garden and made sure her family had fresh home-baked bread and her famous butter tarts. She loved to sing, and often when her children returned from school they would know where she was by the lovely sound of her voice. She opened her home to her children's friends and the house was often filled on weekends with teenagers, with Marie at the centre of the group. After the children moved away, she enjoyed the company of her Shih-Tzu, Bart, and shared her good cheer with neighbours on their daily walks.

Marie's marriage to Alan ended after 33 years. In 1980, she started a market research business which had become very successful by the time she retired at age 75.

Marie always played an active part in her community: she volunteered for many years with the Girl Guide movement, and sat on the Board of a local affordable housing organization. Marie also participated in her church, as a member of the choir, the Catholic Women's League, Parish Council, and by visiting and driving shut-ins to Sunday services. For many years she coordinated funeral lunches for the families of those who passed on. She also received a humanitarian award from the Red Cross for donating blood. Marie was an avid curler and was awarded a lifetime membership in the Highland Curling Club for her years of service. She loved to travel - to visit her children and other relatives in BC, Manitoba, Alberta, Ontario and Hawaii - and to explore new places like the Maritimes, England and Alaska.

Marie's love for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren was always evident, whether it was walking a baby with colic, showing toddlers how to pick raspberries in her back yard, teaching the older ones to golf, or playing cards on a Sunday afternoon. Her sense of humour shone in her interactions with her family.

Marie was predeceased by her parents: Leonard and Caroline (Kloepher) Schell, and brothers: Edwin and Leo Schell.

She is survived by her two sisters and a brother, as well as many nieces and nephews. Lovingly remembered by her six children, grandchildren and her seven great-grandchildre.

A memorial service will take place on Monday, August 22, 2016 at Our Lady of Peace Church, 425 Broad Street North, Regina. Arrangements are under the care of Victoria Avenue Funeral Home.

Special thanks to the nurses and doctors of Unit 5E at the Regina General Hospital for their kindness and compassion. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to remember Marie's generosity are invited to make donations to SOFIA House, Box 37125, Regina, SK S4S 7K4.
