    • Fire damages historic Cambridge building that was Ontario's first free public school

CAMBRIDGE \emdash  Firefighters estimate damage at $100,000 to a house that was Ontario's first free public school. Firefighters bashed in the front door of 849 Queenston Rd., looking for someone thought to be inside. It turned out nobody was, but a dog was rescued as they searched the smoke-filled, buildinng..... The original part of the building was built in 1839, as the first school house in the Town of Preston. Prominent Preston citizen Otto Klotz was a member of the school board, formed in 1838. He lobbied to create a "free" public school, because it was a benefit to all citizens, says information from the City of Cambridge archives..1a
