      Was member of Galt Police Department, Native of Aberfoyle

      Following a serious illness of only four weeks, in Galt, on Saturday morning, August 16, 1941, in his 41st year. Constable Byrne received his early education at Aberfoyle Public School and Guelph Collegiate Institute. In 1927, he went to Galt, where he joined the fire department, transferring to the police force of that city ten years ago. In 1930, he married Gertrude M. Hammer of Glenallen, a graduate of Galt Hospital, who survives him, together with one daughter, Patricia Jane; his mother, Mrs. Mary Byrne of R. R. #6, Puslinch; one sister, Mrs. C. Lester of R. R. #6, Puslinch; five brothers, Frank J. on the homestead; John of Winnipeg; William of Barrie; Edwin E. of Hamilton; and Leo T. of Guelph. He was predeceased by his father, five years ago. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was beloved and respected by all who knew him. Funeral on Aug. 19 at 9 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Galt. The service was conducted by Rev. Father Doyle. A large group of members of the Guelph Knights of Columbus, together with over fifty policemen from Guelph, Galt, Toronto, Preston and Paris, attended the service at the grave. In Galt, Traffic Officer Webb looked after arrangements for the funeral procession, which was headed by the black and white provincial police patrol car and attended by Galt firemen, provincial and mounted police and members of Guelph, Hamilton and Galt Police Forces. Pallbearers included four brothers, Frank, John, Edwin and Leo Byrne; Walter Scott and T. O'Grady of Galt. Interment Marymount Cemetery, Guelph.
