- CAMPBELL, PETER
One of British Columbia's oldest citizens has gone to join the ranks of pioneers who have passed on at Vancouver on November 22, 1928. Peter Campbell, 108, a resident in Canada for one hundred and five years and of British Columbia for forty years, died this week in the General Hospital. He was five months older than "Dad Quick", Vancouver's veteran saddle-maker. He resided in a cabin on Powell Street. Born in Argyleshire, Scotland in the spring of 1820, he came to Canada in one of the early sailing ships, when he was only 3 years of age. His family settled at Puslinch, between Orangeville and Galt, ON, where his father, who was a schoolteacher, hewed out of the wilderness, a homestead for his family. Later, they moved to Egremont Township. Peter commenced his wanderings at an early age and in his roaming, journeyed to various parts of Ontario. He was postmaster at Hanover and a druggist in Toronto. Throughout, he retained his keen interest in politics, being a staunch Conservative. He visited the prairies with a survey party, when the C. P. R. was under construction and then, came to BC forty years ago. With the exception of a short period eight years ago, when he fell from a tree which he was pruning, he enjoyed good health and had often expressed the desire to live another decade. Gardening was his great hobby and even at his advanced age, he could be seen working his garden early in the morning, "pottering around", as he expressed it. His body rested at the T. Edwards Undertaking Co. 's chapel.
