Notes |
- "Pioneer Life Ended--'Grandpa' Dodge' died in Bowne Saturday.
Owen Dodge, aged 94, died Saturday, July 20, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Walton in Bowne. Considering his advanced years, Mr. Dodge was unusually active until the past year when occasional spells of sickness rapidly enfeebled his condition. He had been a resident of Michigan nearly 50 years and was closely associated with the early history of Gaines twp. Funeral services were held at the Gaines UB church Monday conducted by Rev. A. M. Bostwick with burial in the North Gaines Cemetery.
Owen Dodge was born May 23, 1818 in Canada. He was married to Miss Mary Levagood in 1841 and came to Michigan in 1854. To this union were born 11 children, 5 of whom survive, Owen of Gaines twp., Mrs. Maggie Clemens of Caledonia, Mrs. Diana Walton of Bowne, Mrs. Josephine Jones of Petoskey and Simon L. Dodge of Bay Shore.
His wife died in 1865 (sic) and in 1875 he was married to Mrs. Mary Colburn who died in 1900. Besides the children, he is survived by 26 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren."

Caledonia"s Three Oldest Men
The three wise men who navigated the sea in a bowl have been honored as the heroes of a nursery rhyme; the three graces, the three Rs and a host of other "threes" have been made much of, but Caledonia's three old men have gone their peaceful way for many years without being chased by moving picture photographers or having a new brand of breakfast food named after them. According to all accounts, non of them has been honored even by having his photograph in a patent medicine advertisement.
But oblivion, that abyss of unfathomable depth, is to claim them as its own no longer, for at the request of The Evening Press, Caledonia's three oldest inhabitants "looked pleasant" for just a moment and the photographer snapped his camera.
The three men are Benjamin L. Fulton, Owen Dodge, and William I. Wood, each of whom is ninety-two years of age and each of whom enjoy good health and eyesight, none of them being obliged to wear glasses.
Mr. Fulton was born in Massillon, Stark county, Ohio, and when he was only fourteen years old he was taken by his parents to Richland county, Ohio, the family being the third to locate in that county. He has been a resident of Caledonia for about thirty years. He has been justice of the peace for Caledonia township for sixteen years.
Mr. Dodge was born in Berlin, Ont. in 1818, and came to Michigan fifty-five years ago, most of his life in Michigan having been spent in or near Caledonia.
Mr. Wood was born in Livingston county, New York and came to Michigan fifty-two years ago. He has since lived in Caledonia township or village. For four years he was supervisor from this township and for two years he held the office of tax collector.
All three are still sturdy and full of life and it is not impossible that they should be photographed at some future time on the occasion of their one hundredth anniversary.
