  • Notes
    • He was born in Freudenberg, Germany, the son of Anselm Franzmathes and Christina Josepha Reichert. He was the 24th person in the United States to file for 80 acres of land under the Timber Culture Act of March 3, 1873.

      From his OBITUARY:

"72 of his 98 years were spent in Smith County. He arrived here in the year 1873 when Smith Center had a scale and one building but he saw in the fertile farmlands of what was later named Crystal Plains and Banner the answer to the desires of his parents to find the greater promises in America. He and his wife whom he had married in 1864, and who lived until 1934, to celebrated with her mate 70 years of wedded bliss, homesteaded a tract of land in Banner the year they arrived here, and on this farm they lived the next 46 years, raising their fine famiy of 11 children and helping to create Hummer and Smith Center."

"7 children survive their father: Henry and Charles Franzmathes, Mrs. Elizabeth Breon, Mrs. Sarah Welmer, Mrs Ida Nelson, Smith Center; Mrs. Bertha Walker, Lincoln Neb. and Fred Franzmathes, Kansas City, MO. There are also 19 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. Mr Franzmathes's brothers and sister preceeded him in death."
