Notes |
- So often called upon in the past to chronicle the death of others the publishers of the Independent this week have to announce the death of their brother and member of their staff, Mr. Otto A Ritz who passed away at his home last Saturday morning following a few days illness with pneumonia. He had been at his duties until a week ago last Saturday, and the following Monday he was taken ill with what was at first thought to by only a slight attack of pneumonia. His condition grew worse, but was not considered dangerous and his sudden and unexpected passing on Saturday morning was a great shock to his family and relatives. The deceased was the youngest son of Mr. Daniel Ritz and was born in New Hamburg on December 4, 1893 and had thus reached the age of 34 years 1 month and 3 days. He spent his whole lifetime here and with the exception of a few years was employed since 1910 in the office of this newspaper where he was a linotype operator. He was thoroughly familiar with all the work in a country printing office and his loss will be keenly felt by all. The late Otto Ritz was married on October 16, 1920, to Miss Elena Betzner of New Hamburg, who, with two sons, Dickie, aged 5, and Ernst, aged 3, are left to mourn his early departure. He is also deeply mourned by his father, four brothers and four sisters, namely; Walter and Erwin Ritz of Galt; Mrs. Albert Guetz, of Elmira; Mrs. Ed. Huehn of Heidelberg; Mrs. Wm. Seyler; Mrs. Louise Kischell and Daniel E. and Lorne Ritz of this town. His mother and one sister predeceased him. Deceased was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and took a prominent part in the affairs of the Order, being secretary of Nith Lodge here at the time of his death. The funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon and was attended by a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends. Rev. H.R. Mosig, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, of which deceased had been a member, conducted the services at the house and graveside. The members of the local Odd Fellow Lodge, as well as a number from Mitchell and Stratford, attended the funeral in a body and followed the remains to Riverside Cemetery, where they rendered the last services of the order to their departed brother, Rev. E. Dale and Bro. Rev. E. L. Vivian officiating. The following brethren of Nith Lodge acted as pall bearers; E. Pfaff; Samuel Peacock; Geo. Morley; Norman Ament; L. Hostetler; Howard Culbert.
