Notes |
- Large Society Funeral
On Sunday last the mortal remains of the late Frederick W. Ernst were interred with Masonic Old Fellows and Foresters rites in the cemetery at Waterloo. The deceased had been in the hotel business in Hanover for nearly a year and was doing a prosperous trade. He was only 27 years and 10 months old and leaves a wife and a child to mourn his untimely loss. Previous to going to Hanover, he assisted his mother here, carrying on the Queen's hotel of this place under the name of Ernst Bros. His father was the late John Ernst, formerly an hotel-keeper here. The deceased was very popular with all who knew him, he was an active member of the Masonic fraternity also the Odd Fellows and Foresters belonging to the lodges here, he was also a splendid Cricketer and played many fine games with the Hamburg Cricket Club, he was a consistent conservative in politics. The deceased died suddenly of heart disease at Hanover last Thursday morning, he had been ailing slightly for a day or two before his death, but did not complain and was about his business as usual. On the morning of his death, he dropped over on his bed without an utterance, his wife being near him caught him in her arms as he fell gently over. His wife is the daughter of Mr. Fred Schlote, retired butcher, of Waterloo, and it was her desire that her late husband should be buried in Waterloo. In accordance with this the different fraternities here, decided to charter a special train to enable them to attend the funeral. There were visiting brethern from Milverton, Stratford, Tavistock, Shakespeare, Bright, Plattsville, Hamburg, Baden, Berlin and Waterloo. About 250 Foresters took part in the procession, about 75 Odd Fellows and 60 Masons were present, the two latter bodies would have been consistently augmented if it had been more thoroughly known in Berlin. A long line of carriages and friends followed the hearse. The Lutheran church choir sang with great taste one or two suitable selections before the funeral moved off from Mr. Schlote's residence. The Rev. Mr. Christiansen, Lutheran Minister, conducted the burial services and the Masons, Odd Fellows, and Foresters each followed with their own respective burial ceremonies at the grave after which they reformed and marched quietly back to their respective lodge rooms and dispersed. The special train left for home at six p.m. The pall bearers were Messrs. John R. Feick, F. H. McCallum, Louis Ritz, Wm. Walker, Wm. Bishop and John R. Katzenmeier.
