  Mrs. Sophia Merner, widow of Ammon Merner, and a resident of Waterloo for 60 years, died at her home, 82 Caroline street, last evening. Mrs. Merner was 82 years of age. She would have reached her 83rd birthday on Monday. She was born in New Hamburg. Her husband predeceased her five years ago and she is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Minerva McGuirk, Bridgeport, Conn., Mrs. William Knell, Kitchener, and Miss Minnie Merner, at home, three sisters and one brother, Misses Minnie and Marion Ernst of New Hamburg, and Mrs. Agnes Rebelski and William Ernst of Toronto. Four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren also survive. The funeral will be held Monday at 2: 30 from the residence to Waterloo Mount Hope Cemetery Kitchener Daily Record, October 23, 1937 ____________ January 29, 1879 - Sophia B. Ernst and Ammon Merner, both of New Hamburg, were married in New Hamburg by the Honourable S. Weber. Berliner Journal - February 20, 1879 ___________ Mrs. Ammon Merner The death of a former resident of New Hamburg, Mrs. Ammon Merner, occurred at her home in Waterloo last Friday, October 22nd, after a short illness. The deceased would have been 83 years of age on October 25th, the day of her funeral. The late Mrs. Merner who before her marriage was Sophia Ernst was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Ernst, of New Hamburg. She was born at Petersburg but came with her parents to New Hamburg as a young girl. She was married here to Ammon Merner, son of the late Senator Merner, of this town. After residing here for a short time she moved with her husband to Waterloo about 60 years ago and had since resided in that town. In religion the deceased was a devout Lutheran. Her husband predeceased her five years ago, but she leaves in bereavement three daughters, Mrs. Minerva McQuirk, Bridgeport, Conn., Mrs. Wm. Knell, Kitchener, and Miss Minnie at home, besides three sisters, Misses Minnie and Marion Ernst, of New Hamburg, Mrs. Agnes Rebelski. Toronto, and one brother, Wm. Ernst, Toronto. The funeral was held on Monday afternoon with service at her late home, conducted by Rev. Mr. Roberts, followed by interment in Mount Hope Cemetery New Hamburg Independent, October 29, 1937
