- FAHRNER, FRANK MATTHEW
The passing of Mr. Fahrner, which occurred peacefully in the local hospital in the early hours of Saturday morning (1955), brought to a close a long life, well lived, full of honour, respect and the love of family and a host of friends. Mr. Fahrner, who would have been 90 years of age on June 14th, had enjoyed but indifferent health during the past year or so and family and friends were aware of his gradually weakening condition. All knew there was little hope of his return to health, when he fell in his home two weeks ago and fractured his hip. Last Friday, there was a noticeable change and his family was summoned to his bedside. He was born on June 14, 1865 at Morriston, Wellington Co., ON. On Oct. 25, 1893, he married Mary McLelland of Galt, ON and fourteen years later, they and their small family came west to Manitoba, settling first in the Eden district for two years and then moving to what is still called the Fahrner farm in Gillespie district, purchased several years ago by Murray Smith. Here they farmed until their retirement in 1935, when they moved to Winnipeg but after several years there, they returned to be nearer old friends and neighbours of many years standing and purchased a house on Broadfoot Ave. A year ago, they moved into their new and comfortable little home on Jamaica St., built to the rear of their son, Fred's property. The family has always taken an active interest in community functions, both while on the farm and since coming to Gladstone and Mr. Fahrner was probably the most interested one of all. This was especially so in their years on the farm. His happiest hours, however, were those spent in church work and besides being a most faithful attendant at all services, he was also fond of singing and dearly loved to help out in choir work or in joining in as a member of the congregation in singing the old hymns. He served as elder in the local United Church for several years after coming to Gladstone, as well as in other capacities all through the years. Mr. Fahrner served on the district School Board continuously from 1901 until he retired in 1935. But, while he will be remembered for his keen interest in his community, his family, his home and friends, who were legion, probably his greatest attribute was a disposition that expelled warmth, friendliness and godliness to all. His outlook on life was of such wholesome, happy nature that it showed in his ever-present smile and in the joyful greetings which he gave everyone. Indeed, it can be said with certainty, that Mr. Fahrner didn't know what it was to harbour evil thoughts toward anyone and as a consequence, he numbered everyone as his friend. Funeral service was held from the United Church in Gladstone on Tues., May 31 at 2. Rev. Bewell took the opportunity of speaking in a highly laudatory fashion of one whom, through the last ten years or so, he had come to have the highest of respect. His message was not one of sorrow but rather for quiet thankfulness in the knowledge that this had been a life lived happily and fruitfully and very near to godliness for almost four score years and ten. His wife and family was indeed fortunate in knowing him as a husband and father, Rev. Bewell said but spoke in measure of sympathy for his wife, who must now feel great sorrow and a feeling of emptiness, after so many happy years together. In 1953, the old couple were able to be at home to their friends on the occasion fo their 60th wedding anniversary. Hymns sung were "Unto The Hills" and "O Love That Will Not Let Me Go". Left besides his wife are, one daughter, Mrs. Eva Gould of Winnipeg; two sons, Alwyn of Winnipeg; and Fred of Gladstone. Two daughter predeceased him in 1910 and 1911. There are eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Honorary pallbearers: D. J. Paterson of Westbourne; Rev. A. Caskey of Portage; E. A. Stout, William Ferguson, Percy Hunter, and Karl Siegel. Pallbearers: John McLennan and Allan McDiarmid of Helston; John Steiss of Mayfeld; Earl Stout Jr., Albert Zerbin and A. E. McLennan. Those attending from a distance included: Mrs. Harold Taylor, niece, of Virden; Mrs. Eva Gould, Barry and Marilyn of Winnipeg; John McLelland of Winnipeg; Mr. and Mrs. Alwyn Fahrner of Winnipeg.
