- Description: Alexander Mayer was my 2nd Great Grandfather. Alexander was born Nov. 21, 1823. To date I have not found a definitive birthplace. I have sought Alexander's birthplace for severals decades. Anecdotal sources have stated birthplaces of Germany, Bavaria, Alsace-Lorraine, Upper Alsace, Switzerland and several more. Appreciating Alex's emigration to Canada, and his personal and familial associations in his new found home, it is most likely Alex came from the greater geographical areas of present day Saarbrücken, Germany, to Freiburg, Germany to Basel, Switzerland to Metz, France. My best lead thus far, shows that Alexander may have been from Emmendingen Germany.
Alex spoke Hochdeutsch or one of the many aberrant Schweizerdeutsch dialects. His children and grandchildren spoke a similar dialect, and were essentially unable to verbally communicate with other greater Mayer family members speaking Plattdeutsch. My Mayer Family Tree shows Alex's parents as Alexis Mayer & Genefa (Geneva) Fogelbacher (Vogelbacher). I also show Alex had a sister of Theresa (married to an H. Nunn), and also a second sister who was a Catholic Nun. Documentation for my Mayer Family Tree was derived from a hardcopy Mayer Family Tree prepared during the period from about 1950 through 1978, by Alexander's granddaughters, Rose Mary Mayer (Sister Rose Angela, IHM b. 1893, d. 1977) and Hilda W. Mayer (Sister Mary Rosary, IHM, b.1901, d. 1986). Alex's granddaughters (my Great Aunts) were meticulous folk, and thus I have found almost no errors in their tree which covers the Mayer, Heimler, Fleischman, Lienhart, and Schirmer families from the late 1700's until about 1950.
Alexander married Susannah Heimler (b 7/21/1838, d.3/21/1909). Both Alexander & Susannah are buried in St. Agatha Cemetery, Wellesley ONT CA, Sec. D, No. 44)...Alex and Susannah's first child was John H. Mayer (Johannes) born in 1858. John H. is my Great Grandfather, and like his father, and his brother Peter, was a tinsmith. John H. later moved to Detroit MI USA. Any and all leads on the origins of Alexander Mayer are sought and appreciated.

Notes |
- "While Mr. Alex Meyer, Tinsmith, was returning from Baden, on Tuesday week and within two miles of his home in Wellesley village he attempted to pass a team ahead of him, but his buggy coming in contact with obstruction, he was pitched out on his head, and died from the effects of the injury next day. Meyer was a very respectable man, about 50 years old, and leaves a family".
