  • Notes
    • After a lengthy battle with various medical conditions, James "Jim" Arndt of Gladstone passed away Wednesday, June 15, 2011 at the Portage General Hospital. Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 21st at Gladstone Christian Fellowship with Pastor Randy Fehr officiating. Darren Arndt delivered the eulogy and message. Jim was born in Kitchener, ON, on November 14, 1940, the second youngest of 10 children. He grew up on a farm, attended a local elementary school and graduated from Kitchener Collegiate Institute in 1958. After high school Jim began work as an accountant for a local construction company, effectively combining his aptitude for mathematics with his love for big machines. In 1965, Jim married his sweetheart Martha (Snider), whom he had met and romanced at the local roller-skating rink. They welcomed son Darren in 1968, Dean in 1969 and Duane in 1971. Family life was a high priority to both Jim and Martha, as is evidenced by the many vacation, birthday and family gathering photos and Super 8 films we have left to cherish. In 1980 Jim went into business for himself selling advertising specialties to campgrounds and other businesses across Ontario. This enabled him to get out on the road, meet people from all over, and be his own boss - an endeavor well-suited to his personality. He later took a job as an insurance inspector, through which he was transferred to Winnipeg, MB in 1992. In 1996 he moved to a beautiful acreage in Lowe Farm, which brought out the farm boy in Jim. The grandchildren have very fond memories of Papa's tractor rides, the treehouse and the evening bonfires at the meticulously maintained 5 acre paradise. Eventually, after failing health, the farm became too much and Jim and Martha made the move to Gladstone in 2005 to be closer to their sons. For the past year-and-a-half, Jim has resided at Third Crossing Manor Personal Care Home. Throughout the changes, Jim maintained his wonderful sense of humour, an enduring faith in Jesus Christ, and a sincere devotion to his loving wife Martha. Jim was predeceased by his parents, Ernst and Freda (Ziegler), brothers Howard, David, Albert, and Walter. He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife Martha, three sons and daughters-in-law with 11 grandchildren: Darren and Trasi (Rachel, Erik, Caleb, Sarah) of Mississauga, ON; Dean and Jill (Julia, Jeffrey, Gregory) of Portage; and Duane and Christine (Clifford, Wallace, Christopher, Kashton) of Austin. He is also survived by two brothers, Donald and Kenneth (Marjorie) and three sisters, Ruth (Ken Bauman), Katherine and Rose; all of southern Ontario. Many other family and friends in both Kitchener and around Manitoba will miss his quick humour and quiet faithfulness. Thank you to the various medical professionals who worked hard to keep Jim with us for 70 years. We appreciate your efforts and value all the time we were given.
