    • Trapped in Cave-In, Kitchener Man Injured

KITCHENER-Fred Steuer, 51, of 93 King St. West, is in the K-W Hospital with injuries received Wednesday when pinned in a trench on Hampton Rd.

Steuer was covered to the neck with dirt when a part of a wall fell away jamming him against the opposite side of the trench.

He was freed by fellow Kitchener Water Commission workmen. Extent of his injuries could not immediately be learned.

      Was Trimming Sides

The mishap occurred on Hampton Rd. where some house water services are under installation.

A trencher machine had cut a ditch and Steuer was in the six- foot-deep trench. Officials indicated he had been trimming the sides and levelling the ditch floor where needed.

A piece of the west wall fell away pinning Steuer to the opposite of the trench and covering him to the neck. Fellow workmen freed him.

While an ambulance was responding, John Halliwell, city traffic supervisor, applied first aid to a gash on the right side of the man's head.

Steuer was conscious and fellow employees said they believed he had chest injuries, possibly broken ribs.

      In Road Centre

The trench knifed across Hampton Rd. and the cave-in occurred about the centre of the street.

Marcel Pequegnat, Water Com mission superintendent, said it appeared the fall of dirt was at a point where a previous ditch had been.

The trench mishap was the third in the Twin Cities in the last two years. One was fatal.

On Nov. 9, 1951, G. L. Jackson. 34, of Kitchener, was suffocated in a cave-in while working in a sewer trench on Moore Ave., Waterloo.
