      Preston - Joseph Bauer, 72, of 418 Lowther St., died Wednesday at his home. A well-known resident of Preston for 70 years, Mr. Bauer had been ill for some time and confined to bed for 10 weeks.

      Born in Whelling, W. Va., a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. August Bauer, he came to Preston at the age of two. Mr. Bauer was employed for many years as a machinist with the Grand River Railway, retiring in 1947. He was a member of St. Clement's church, Preston, and the Holy Name society. Interested in music, Mr. Bauer was a member of the former famous Preston Silver Band for 25 years. He was married in Preston on Feb. 9, 1909, to Minnie Wolfenberg, who survives.

      Also surviving are three daughters, Mrs. John (Edna) Rennie and Mrs. Philip (Olga) Boegel, both of Kitchener, and Mrs. Francis (Dorothy) Mannion, of Preston; three brothers, Charles of Arizona, John of Detroit and Edward of Preston; three sisters, Mrs. Vincent Ferguson, Mrs. Raymond Kent, both of Detroit, and Mrs. Clara Sanford of Toronto. Ten grandchildren also survive. Two sisters predeceased him.

      Requiem high mass will be conducted Saturday at 9:30 a.m., at St. Clement's RC church. The body is at the home, 418 Lowther St. Burial will be in St. Clement's cemetery.
