Elizabeth "Betty" Schaefer
1928-2022
One of the world's best smiles and a wicked sense of humour. Betty had these and a strong commitment to helping others.
A native of Kitchener, Ontario, Betty received her basic Nursing training at St. Mary's Hospital in that city, and subsequently earned certificates in Public Health Nursing and Advanced Public Health Nursing, and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing, all three from the University of Toronto.
Betty started in Public Health Nursing in 1952 and spent 1954/55 in San Francisco at Stanford University Hospital as a staff nurse on the Orthopedic ward. She came to Oshawa in 1959 to the Oshawa Health Department where she advanced from senior nurse to supervisor and assumed the position of director of the Health Unit in 1971. Those who knew her then will remember the great "Lice" war.
Betty was always active in the community. She served as chairman of the Board of Directors of Faith Place in Oshawa. She was a member of the board of Governors, Durham College of Applied Arts and Technology and a board member of Oshawa General Hospital, Durham House and Durham Region Branch of the Victorian Order of Nurses.
Between 1974 and 1990 she chaired or served on 18 committees of the Durham Region District Health Council and Oshawa General Hospital, and on various task forces, as well as project teams for the Ontario Ministry of Health. She is a past president of Soroptimist International of Oshawa and District.
After serving as Director of Public Health Nursing, Durham Regional Health Unit, Betty retired in 1990. For the next 32 years she travelled and took care of her best friend Beth and their beloved dog Binkley.
She passed away October 20th at Ballycliffe Long Term Care, where she had lived for the past year.
Friends are invited to gather together at McEachnie's Family Centre, 20 Church Street North (1st block north of Kingston Road) on February 22, 2023, from 2pm to 6 pm. Please bring your best Betty stories to help us celebrate a truly wonderful woman.
