    • EDWARD W. SCHAUFFLER '02

IN the death of Edward W. Schauffler, Dec. 24, 1960, the Class of 1902 lost a devoted classmate and Princeton a loyal alumnus.
Ed came to Princeton from the Dwight School in New York, joining our Class in 1898, and was graduated with us in 1902. Following graduation he first found a place with the Bank of Man- hattan in New York, but in 1905 changed to the firm of Johnson & Higgins, marine Insurance brokers, thus entering upon what proved to be his field of activity for his lifetime..

In 1918 he became associated with the Apple- ton Cox Co., marine insurance underwriters, and in 1923 moved to Toronto to open their Canadian branch, then the Wellington Insurance Agencies, later, Marine Insurance Limited.

He was well known both in Canada and the United States and upon his retirement in 1955 had been active in the marine insurance business for more than 40 years.

He served for three years as president of the Canadian Board of Marine Underwriters, and was regarded for many years as the dean of marine underwriters in Canada.

Ed's outside interests were numerous. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Yacht Club: an active member of the Princeton Alumni Asso- ciation of Canada. He had a deep personal inter- est in the Overseas Mission of the United Church of Canada and its station in Angolia, Portuguese West Africa, which his two daughters, the late Miss Dorothy Schauffler and the Rev. Amy Schauffler, entered.
He is survived by his wife, Hilda; a daughter, the Rev. Amy Schauffter; a son, David J. 32: a brother, Henry A. '11; and two sisters, Miss Clara Schauffler and Mrs. R. Higginbottom. To each and all of these our Class extends its belated but sincere sympathy.
