    • KERSCHENBAUM, Solly

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Solly Kerschenbaum at the age of 84 after a long and courageous battle with cancer on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 surrounded by the love of his family. His memory will be deeply cherished by his loving children, daughter, Myra Sherman and her husband Ken of Waterloo, and his son, Dr. Joel Kerschenbaum and his wife Nancy of Houston, Texas. Always a kind, fun-loving and generous grandfather, he will be dearly missed by his four grandchildren, Aubrey and Jessica Sherman and Taylor and Aubram Kerschenbaum. One of Sol's greatest pleasures was to share in his grandchildren's joys and accomplishments. They will miss being able to ask for his wise advice. Born and raised in Kitchener, Ontario, Sol is predeceased by his parents, Abraham and Bessie Kerschenbaum. Sol was a proud Canadian, having served as a Staff Sergeant in the RCAF in the Second World War from 1941-1944. Stationed in Trenton, Ontario he was in charge of the ground salvage flight crew for aviation training. After the war he helped his father in the wholesale cattle business. From 1946 to 1952 Sol was the owner of a men's wear clothing store called The Swank Shop which was located at Duke and Queen Streets in Kitchener, Ontario. In 1953, Sol started a long and successful relationship as a men's wear manufacturer's agent for Coronet Clothing in Montreal. In 1956 Sol met the founder of Montreal Leather Garment which was then a new company with only four employees. With Sol as their Vice-President of Sales and aided by his natural flair for style and design, the company soon grew to 250 employees, producing high end men's and ladies leather and suede garments for leading fashion retailers across Canada and the USA. Throughout his life Sol was an avid golfer and a member for many years at The Cutten Club in Guelph, Ontario. Sol loved both the camaraderie and the competition of the game, winning many amateur events and accomplishing nine holes-in-one over his lifetime. Sol spent his retirement years in St. Simon's Island, Georgia and later relocated to Pompano Beach, Florida at the Palm-Aire Golf and Country Club. He was an active member of the Greater Fort Lauderdale community, volunteering for many committees and charities. In Florida, Sol continued his passion for music and dance and soon became a Seniors Tango champion in Advanced Ballroom Dancing. Sol's memory will be cherished by his long time companion and friend Cathy Pope of Fort Lauderdale with whom he enjoyed the Florida nightlife and memorable vacations. During the last year of his life, Sol was very fortunate to become dear friends with Mildred Boos whose loving care and companionship was very special to him. Throughout his life, Sol's warm and generous personality, his keen insight and intelligence and wonderful sense of humour were his outstanding qualities that will always be cherished by his many friends. Sol taught us to love life, cherish family and to face challenges bravely. We will miss the magic of his smile and the twinkle in his eyes. He will continue to live on in our hearts and we will treasure the memories forever. The Sherman family would like to thank Dr. Bob Stevens, Oncology, for his special mixture of humour, compassion and skill which makes him an outstanding physician and friend. A service will be held on Thursday, August 5, 2004 at 11 a.m. at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home, 621 King St. W., Kitchener, with Rabbi Joseph Bloch officiating followed by interment at Parkview cemetery , Waterloo. Private Shiva. In lieu of flowers, friends may wish to make a donation in Sol's memory to HopeSpring, The Hospice of KW or Lissard House. Donations may be placed through the funeral home
