  • Notes
    • BISHOP, Richard John - Rick, age 75, of Guelph, on July 20, 2004, at Smiths Falls District Hospital, after a brief and sudden illness ended his 13 year battle with cancer. Rick, with his cherished wife of 52 years, Betty, had been pleased to be able to spend several recent summer days at their beloved Rideau Lake cottage the "Bishops' Point-of-View" a family retreat that is largely the work of his own hands. Rick lived 34 years in Guelph, teaching at Conestoga College for 20 years, yet was even better known for his extensive volunteer and community work with the Guelph Mobility Service in its early years; with the Lions Club in their many projects (a tireless fund-raiser); with the Red Cross/Canadian Blood Services (as a regular blood donor for over 40 years and then a volunteer); and as a volunteer driver with the Canadian Cancer Society. In recognition of these and other activities, he was one of the first recipients of the Governor General's Caring Canadian Award. Rick leaves four children, Ron, and his partner Melanie Parker of Toronto, Kathy Herr, and her partner Jon Briggs of Woodford, Virginia, Susy Graham and her husband Don of Simcoe, Ontario and Linda McGuire, and her husband Ken of Toronto. Also three dear grandchildren, Julie, Tammy, and Kevin, in Simcoe. He will be deeply missed by his beloved sister and brother-in-law, Torch and Al Russell of Ladner, B.C.; his three nephews and their wives and families, Dean (Sherry), Neil (Fran), Gary (Fern), all in B.C. ; brother-in-law, Clarke Slemon and his wife Tish Khomasurya of Shenandoah, Iowa, as well as extended family and his many friends, neighbours (and brother Lions), in Guelph and at Rideau Lake. According to Rick's wishes, cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends at St. James the Apostle Anglican Church, 86 Glasgow St. N., Guelph, on Monday, July 26, 2004 beginning at 12 p.m., followed by a Memorial Service at 1 p.m. A short reception will then take place in the church parlour. After this reception, immediate family will proceed to Memory Gardens, Breslau, for the interment of ashes. In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to honour Rick's memory with a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society, or to the Lions Clubs' fund for services to the Blind, or by making an appointment with Canadian Blood Services. Donations can be made at the church during the visitation or at Gilbert MacIntyre & Son Funeral Home, Dublin Chapel, 252 Dublin St. N., Guelph, 519-822-4731
