  • Notes
    • [His date of death was previously listed as July 9, 1759. However, researcher Sarah Clayton has pointed out that is merely the date he signed his Will. She has explained her conclusions below.*]

Jacob was the son of Hans Huber and Barbel 'Barbara' Lier *(abt 1662 Uerzlikon, Kappel, Zürich, Switzerland- after 1700 Switzerland). Barbara's parents were Jagli Lier/ Luyer and Elsbeth Strebel. Jacob immigrated with his father to Lancaster County and took over the family homestead by 1745. He was married first to Anna (?). I have not seen any records stating that her mother was Anna Christina Hershberger (the memorial created and linked to Jacob Huber).

His second wife was Anna Leininger (1695-1738 Lancaster County PA). Anna may have been baptized in the Catholic Church on January 16 1695 at Kirchheimbolanden, Pfalz, Bayern, Switzerland. According to several online family trees, Anna Leininger was the daughter of Jacob Philippi or Phillipp Jacob Leininger (Feb 1 1627 Lichtenberg, Bas-Rhin, Alsace, France-Nov 1, 1710 Mietesheim) and Anna Catherina (1648 Mietesheim, Bas-Rhin, Alsace, France-October 26, 1713 Mietesheim. Note that this would mean her father was about 68 years of age and her mother about 47 when she was born. It is more likely that Anna was the daughter of one of Jacob's older sons- Hans Phillipp Leininger (1677-April 24, 1741 Mietesheim) or Hans George Leininger (1678-July 14, 1733).

Jacob and Anna moved to Martic Township, where he took up a tract of several hundred acres of vacant land. He later built a grist mill which his son and grandson operated. In was subsequently known as Strohm' s Mill (rebuilt by David Strohm in 1784).

The known children of Jacob and his first wife were:

1-John Huber (abt 1723, New Holland, Earl Twp-April 1791 Earl Twp PA) married Margaret
2-Martin Huber (1725 Earl Twp-April 21 1785 Earl Twp) second wife was Magdalena Musser
3-Anna Huber Gingrich (abt 1720) married Joseph 'Yost' Gingrich
4-Maria Huber Eberly (1724 Earl Twp) married Jacob Eberly
5-Barbara Huber Stetzler (1722) married Philip Stetzler
6-Margaret Huber Winter (1733) married John Winter

The known children of Jacob and his second wife Anna Leininger were:

      1-Catherine Huber (abt 1734)
      2-Christian Huber (abt 1740 PA)
3-Mary Magdalene Huber (abt 1742 Earl Twp)
4-Jacob Huber Born (abt 1746 Lanc Co PA-Nov 30 1808 Martic Twp PA) married Barbara
5-Mathias Huber (1748 Earl Twp-Oct 25 1825 Hoover Gap TN) married Maria Gfeller

Jacob died in Martic, Providence Township, Lancaster County. Burial location on the family homestead in Martic was described by Harry M. Hoover, The Huber-Hoover Family History (1928), page 45.

Note~year of birth is an estimate based on the consensus of family trees that Jacob was born in Germany or Switzerland between 1698 and 1700.

*Estimated date of death for Jacob Huber 'of Martick'

Often we see the date of Jacob Huber's death reported as "July 9, 1759." This is an error that likely started with Harry M. Hoover's 1928 Huber-Hoover genealogy. He writes Jacob Huber was "born in Switzerland, or the Palatinate prior to 1700, and died in Martic, now Providence Twp., Lancaster County, July 9 1759." A few pages prior to this, Jacob's entire will is transcribed and the date of Jacob's signing is clearly and correctly copied as "29th of July, 1759" and further the date of the proving of the will follows (correctly) as 12 Septemeber 1792. The time gap between the signing of his will and the proving of it is 33 years.

Sometimes it's prudent to assume the testator died very soon prior to Probate, but in Jacob 'of Martick' Hover's case, we know he was deceased by 1772, twenty years prior to probate, because of Deed made 21 November 1772 between Jacob of Martick's two youngest sons, "Jacob Hoover son of Jacob Hoover deceased of the Township of Martick… yeoman, and Barbara his wife of the one part and Matthias Hoover, another son of the said Jacob Hoover deceased" of the same town, now each no longer minors, and Jacob Jr conferring his portion of the land on Pequea Creek adjoining the land of Jacob Good, [now] Jacob Goughanour, containing 210 acres, and the other adjoining Samuel Byers, Henry Hubers containing 48 acres, mentioned in the will "Writing Date 29 July 1759, wherein is written "I Give and Bequeath to and Between my two Sons Jacob & Mathias the Plantation whereon I now live containing 250 acres…"

The deed says the will was "Duly proved and remaining in the Registers Office at Lancaster as of Record may Appear"

Well, it apparently was not duly recorded, as there is evidence to the contrary. Whatever mixup caused the court to require a 67 year old, "Sole Surviving Witness" Martin Beam to have to come in and verify the signature from 33 years prior on Jacob Huber's last Will and Testament we may never ascertain. But letters of administration had already been granted by 1764, so it's likely this was a mistake of the Recorder's office.

The Misc. book at Lancaster Court House records an administrative account on June 4th, 1765, presented by Jacob's "loving friend" Henry Huber and eldest sons, John and Martin, both chosen by the youngest sons, minors over 14 years, Jacob and Mathias as guardians. The Court normally requires the account to be presented within a year from the date of appointment, so we are safe to assume that Jacob of Martick Huber died sometime after June 4th 1764, but certainly before 5 June 1765.

**Some family trees have Margaret Koch (1672-1845) as his mother. Margaret would have to be his father's second wife.

IMPORTANT NOTE~After this memorial was tediously researched and written up, a duplicate memorial wrongly placed as a 'non-cemetery burial' location was discovered. Those types of unknown burials do NOT show up when doing a search for existing Huber memorials anywhere in the entire state of Pennsylvania. I linked daughter Maria to her mother, 'Mrs. Jacob Huber'. But this memorial remains to her father as it was correctly labeled in the Huber Family Cemetery. He is a very significant immigrant ancestor to many and this information on my memorial is provided to note discrepancies in his birth family (specifically noting his father's two wives). The other contributor also IGNORED my polite correspondence suggesting we merge our memorials into one.
