- Elmira Man Killed, Struck by a Train
Solomon Fries Meets Instant Death Near Listowel; Leaves 10 Brothers, Sisters
Solomon Fries, well known Elmira District man, met instant death Tuesday afternoon when struck by a CNF train a mile and a half north of Listowel.
The dead man, who was 64 years old and unmarried, was born near West Montrose and had resided in the West 25 years, returning to this district only ten months ago when his father and mother died. He had since been employed on the farm of Henry Lorch of Wallace Township.
The late Mr. Fries is survived by ten brothers and sisters: Michael, Elmira; Jacob, Elmira; Daniel, Kitchener; John, near Toronto; Mrs. Armand Fulcher, Elmira; Mrs. Plate, Kitchener; Mrs. Rhodes, Kitchener; Mrs. Levi Snider, near Elmira; Mrs. William Dobberthein, Elora; and Mrs. Henry Dobberthein, Iowa.
The funeral will be held from the home of Mrs. Armand Fulcher, Elmira, Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock to St. James' Lutheran church and thence to the Lutheran Cemetery, Rev. Lloyd Kalbfleisch, officiating. Mr. Fries was struck by the south-bound Kincardine-Palmerston train at a private crossing, according to passengers. He was slightly deaf and failed, it is believed, to hear the warning shouts of another teamster who had crossed the track just … (ends here)
