- WATERLOO FIRE KILLS POLICEMAN'S SON, 21
A 21-year-old Waterloo man died in a fire which filled his basement apartment and his family's variety store with smoke shortly after 12:30 am. today.
Dead is Lawrence (Lorne) Schneider, 103 University Ave. W. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Schneider, 64 McDougall Rd., Waterloo. His father is a staff inspector with the Waterloo regional police force and a former inspector with the Waterloo police department.
Waterloo firefighters, who estimated damage to the apartment and variety store at around $25,000, said smoke was "very thick."
Mr. Schneider's pet dog was also killed. No cause has yet been determined.
The Schneiders have five other children, three girls and two boys. The victim had been employed by Colonial Cookies Ltd. Funeral arrangements are incomplet.

SCHNEIDER, Lawrence A. Suddenly, at his residence, 103 University Ave. West, Waterloo, on Friday, April 5, 1974, Lawrence A. Schneider, age 21 years; son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth W. Schneider brother of Robert, Michael and Mary, all of Waterloo, Suzanne (Mrs. William Burgess) of Kitchener and Kathleen (Mrs. Paul Pidcock) of Thornhill; also survived by his maternal grandmother Mrs. Katherine Zepf of Waterloo.
Private funeral services were held today at St. Michael's RC Church, Waterloo. Interment Parkview cemetery, Waterloo.
Donations to the Canadian Save the Children Fund would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy through the Edward R. Good funeral Home, 171 King St. South, Waterloo.
