______________
JACOB LASCHINGER.
The subject of this sketch it may be said has grown up with the industrial interests of Hamburg. He was born here in 1850 and for the past eighteen years has successfully carried on a carriage and wagon manufacturing establishment and blacksmith shop His reputation for turning out first-class honest work is well known throughout Wilmot and adjoining townships. Mr. Laschinger is decidedly industrious, being a man who does not have many idle hours, as he can always be found busy early and late in either the paint shop, woodwork department or the blacksmith shop. In either department he is at home. There are none of Hamburg's citizens more popular, both in their personal and business relations. He has served three years in the village council where he also achieved popularity as an economical and careful municipal legislator. He is at present a valuable member of the Mechanic's Institute, and probably takes as deep an interest in its prosperity as does any other citizen in the community. Upon the death of the late postmaster, it devolved upon the government to appoint a successor to the deceased. Of course it was supposed that a true Grit would receive, the appointment; the supposition was not erroneous. There were a number of aspirants, but Mr. Laschinger seemed to be the favorite and was vigorously urged by his friends to push his case though there was much spirited opposition by some who merely opposed the appointment on the ground that it would be removed from its location opposite the Imperial Hotel. Personally they were not opposed to Mr. Laschinger. The appointment and removal was opposed mainly by the Tories, because if the change was not made a Conservative would still hold the office. They surely did not expect that after the removal by death of the former incumbent who was a staunch Conservative and held the office for many years, that the Reform government could appoint his successor from the ranks of the enemy. It is foolish to think that modern politics run that way. Petitions and counter petitions were in the wind; but in the meantime Mr. Laschinger sawed wood and said little. The result was he received his commission as post master of New Hamburg on July 19th last, and it was only a day prior to the removal, nearly four weeks afterwards that those opposed to the change discovered they had been cleverly outflanked and that the appointment had been made. Mr. Laschinger is a staunch Reformer, and a business man of considerable ability and push and a more fitting incumbent for this responsible office could not have been found in the community. The room occupied by the new postmaster is a few doors south of the Commercial Hotel in the handsome new building recently erected by Mr. Jacob Becker. The room in which the post office is located is admirably adapted for the purpose, having ample room. It is a gem of a post office, and for fixtures, boxes and the partition dividing that public from the official department, it is undoubtedly the neatest and most elegantly equipped post office between here and Toronto. The partition is made from quartered oak, highly polished and exquisitely carved, the panels of which are beautiful gribble glass. In front are the delivery and money order windows, so designated by handsome lettering above each in stained glass. There are 175 lock-boxes highly finished in brass, nickel and glass. The celebrated Yale lock is used. In addition to this there are all the other necessary boxes well made and nicely finished. The whole was made by the Yale and Towne Manufacturing Company of New York City, and sent over in sections from their branch manufactory, in Stamford, Conn. Those who call in will agree with me in saying that Hamburg has the finest post office for a town of its size in the Province. They will find an accommodating postmaster and gentleman in every way competent to hold the position. Mr. Laschinger purchased the fixtures from the above company through their representatives, Seymour & Co., Temple Building, Montreal.
