  • Notes
    • NICHOL, JOHN. This man, the second physician to practise in St. Jacobs, had his name recorded somewhere as Nicholis, an error which has been perpetuated. .

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, on November 16, 1827, a son of Hugh Nichol, he came with his family to Peel Township, Wellington County, in 1843. He attended a grammar school in Auburn, New York, and then began the study of medicine under the preceptorship of Dr. J. M. Morris, a graduate of Bart's Hospital, London, England.

He then went to Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, and received the M. D. degree in 1855. The Canadian Biographical Dictionary says that he practised in or near St. Jacobs for six years, starting in the spring of 1855. The first newspaper insertion of his card appeared on August 13, 1857, having replaced that of Napoleon Wolf in the previous issue.

It is difficult to say where he might have been during the two years from 1855 to 1857.

In the fall of 1861 he entered Victoria University College in Toronto and received his degree from that school in April 1862. On June 2nd. he settled in Listowel. Here he took an active part in municipal affairs, serving as a member of the village and town council for many years. He was also coroner for the county.

He died on October 7th..1892 at 69 years of age, and was survived by his widow, four sons and three daughters.

The above mentioned biographical dictionary said of him< "He bears an irreproachable character."

The Volksblatt mentioned that he left an estate of $81,353.
