- Death's Harvest
The Grim Harvester has been busily plying his sickle among us this week taking his victims in all stages of their pilgrimage - the infant, just started on life's journey; the young man in the prime of life; an the aged and weary pilgrims tired of the long journey and glad to lay down their burden and enter into rest. The first one taken - suddenly and unexpectedly - was Mr. Herman Baedke. He was working for Mr. Henry B. Martin, on the townline between Wellesley and Woolwich, and was out ploughing on Saturday afternoon. A rain came and presently the horses came home alone. A search was at once made and Baedke was found lying in the lane outside the bars or gate which he had closed. He was yet alive, but died before he was brought to the house. Upon examination it was found that his neck was broken. How he received the injury will never be known for certain but it is believed that he had the lines around his neck or body and that, while he was closing the gate, the horses gave a jerk and threw him. He was brought to the home of his brother Mr. John Baedke, in the village, and buried on Tuesday afternoon. He died on his 29th birthday.
