Notes |
- BAUMGARTNER
Johann Wolfgang Baumgartner, born at Ganzenhausen, Bavaria, April 17th, 1820, served his apprenticeship as a stone cutter (Steinhauer) made his journey, and for some years worked around home as a Journeyman.
In 1847 he married Johanna Dorothea Herklein also of Ganzenhausen, who bore him three children of whom two died and the other, a girl, married.
In 1854 they emigrated to America and in 1855 took up residence in Preston, Ontario, where she died shortly after their arrival there.
In 1856 Johann married Christena Barbara Hausch, born on September 15th, 1830, at Giglingen, in Wuertemburg, only a short distance from where Jacob Hespeler was born (at Ehnigen) some twenty years earlier. To them three children were born at Preston, namely:
George on November 4th, 1857.
Phillip on December 9th, 1860.
Jahann Carl on August 14th, 1863.
At Preston he obtained work at his trade from Mason Contractors and also from Jacob Hespeler both at Preston and at New Hope, where Hespeler had erected a stone Grist Mill in 1847, and had embarked on an extensive building programme, which included many of the buildings of the present plant of Stamped and Enamelled Ware Limited.
The work around New Hope kept increasing once the Mason contractors got to know the fine quality of his work with the result, that in 1865, he decided to move from Preston to some location nearer the centre of his operations.
If you would be interested in the type of stone dressing he did, take a look some time at the corner stones on the building on the left bank of the river, just above the bridge, which Hespeler built in 1862, as a weave room. Baumgartner dressed these stones.
He purchased a five acre property in Waterloo Township, fronting on the Town Line, located fifty links south of the Siegle (Now Jamieson) Farm.
In the ledger of Conrad Nahrgang, who used to draw up papers for people, there is a charge against John Baumgartner for drawing up a deed on May 4th, 1865, which probably fixes the date when he moved. The deed is registered as B9-4103.
Later, from time to time, Johann added to his holdings until he owned some 25 acres or thereabouts.
Three more children were born to him in Waterloo Township:
(1) Catharna Rosina born November 2nd, 1865.
(2) Christena Maria born December 11th, 1869.
(3) Heinrich born October 24th, 1874.
Johann died in Waterloo Township, October 15th, 1885....
