10 April 1885 Philip Schmelz died in Aldboro, Elgin County at age of 55 years, 10 months and 12 days. He was a native of Reichartshausen, Grand Duchy of Baden and had been in America since 1851. He had been an agent and correspondent for the "Journal" since its inception. He was appointed bailiff for the 3rd and 4th division court in Elgin County.
