Mrs. William D. Gerrard Is Pleased With Invitation to Royal Wedding in London
GALT It took a Royal wedding to give the mother of five children a chance to see London in the springtime.
"I've always wanted a trip abroad. but with five children. you can't just pick up and go." says Mrs. William D. Gerrard of Galt, one of the lucky women in Canada with an invitation to Princess Margaret's wedding.
Her husband, Lt.-Col. Gerrard, M.C., is commander of the Highland Light Infantry of Canada.
Princess Margaret is Colonel-In-Chief of the Scottish Regiment as well as its affiliated Canadian unit. So it was with great pleasure that Mrs. Gerrard, along with her husband, accepted the invitation for the big event May 6. It will be her first trip to England and she has been busy shopping for a suitable wardrobe.
The dress she chose for the wedding was purchased in Kitchener. It is a street-length white sheath with matching jacket trimmed with a brown mink collar. The dress features wide shoulder straps and pearl beading on the bodice.
With it she will wear a green hat ("I have two to choose from. and can't decide") with green suede shoes and bag. In order that she won't have to pack too many accessories, her traveling suit is being made by her dressmaker in green wool.
An added excitement for their trip is an additional Royal invitation... this one to a reception to be given by the Queen in Buckingham Palace for her sister. on May 4.
For this occasion Mrs. Gerrard will wear a carnation red evening gown in taffeta and chiffon with a bouffant skirt and draped bodice.
Her suitease will also hold casual clothes for sightseeing. "although with ten days in London I won't see too much. I also want to try to squeeze in a trip. to Scotland."
The children were almost as excited as their parents about the invitation. Margo and Ian, 6, will stay with an aunt in Simcoe; Michael, 7. will visit an aunt in London; and David, 13, and Rod. 18, will be taken care of by their grandmother at home.
HER PROBLEMS
"Such are the problems of a mother who travels," says Mrs. Gerrard.
Lt. Col. Gerrard is the son of the late Col. D. E. Gerrard, former commander of the Elgin Regiment, and later commander of the Second Infantry Brigade.
He was with the Fifth Canadian Armored Division and the Eighth New Brunswick Hussars during the Second World War and received the Military Cross during action in Holland.
Mrs. Gerrard is the former Janet Kennedy of Brantford.
