• Notes

  The funeral of the late James Johnson took place on the 8th inst., from the house of George Schneider, New Hamburg, where he had been boarding lately, to the Pinehill Cemetery and laid to rest beside his wife who died a number of years ago. The coffin was taken into the church in Haysville, where the funeral service was read and the Rev. I. Ward, Rector, preached a sermon and also preached a sermon at the grave. The remains of our late neighbor were followed to their last resting place by his only sister and six children and. a good many of his old friends and neighbors by the death of James Johnson Haysville has lost one of its earliest and oldest settlers, he came here with his father and uncle over sixty years ago and settled on the farm now owned by Mr. Aaron Shantz and his uncle on the farm now owned by Mr. Henry Walker. Some years after coming here, James settled on the farm which he owned at the time of his death and married Matilda Brown, sister of our respected townsmen, D r. James Brown. Our late neighbor leaves four sons and two daughters: Thomas and Major, who own and carry on the Zurrich woollen mill; Oliver is a blacksmith and is in business in Clinton; Robert, the youngest son has just returned from New Westminster, B. C., where he has been for over a year and has started a business in Brantford as a plumber; Mary Mrs. Cowon resides in Georgetown and Annie Mrs. Melrose in Baden and his sister Miss M. Johnson resides in Hamilton. Our first settlers have nearly all passed away and soon there will be none left to tell of the hardship of those that came here when it was wilderness. Mr. J. Johnson served for a time in the American war and had applied for pension and would soon have had it with back pay if he had lived. It would only be an act of justice if the American Government were to pay the back pay to his family after keeping him out of it so long. New Hamburg Independent 22 Apr 1892 pg 2
