    • THE CROWN HOTEL.

The tired and hungry wayfarer who finds it necessary to halt for a period of rest within the environments of the village will at once come to the conclusion that Roseville is more fortunate than a good many other villages of her size and population, in having a hotel, where the wants of the travelling public can be supplied in a satisfactory manner. The Crown has an excellent reputation for doing the right thing for all who cross its threshold in quest of something to appease bunger, or per chance, to seek a comfortable lodging for the night after the day's journey. In fact the only disappointment the guest of this house experiences is when the nature of his business requires his presence in another locality, and is to be deprived of its appetizing meals and comfortable beds. This house, though since considerably renovated, is one of the oldest taverns in this section, the original building having been a primitive log structure. Mr. Carl Stuermer, the present proprietor, took charge about nine years ago, it being his first venture in this country as a hotel-keeper. He was born in Munich, Bavaria, in 1849. came to America in 1870, and after visiting some of the principal cities of the United States came to Preston, Ont., where he soon proved to be a most popular citizen. For nine years he was one of that village's school trustees, a member of the village council two years, a collector of assessments two years, two years Recording Secretary of several secret societies and for a number of years was Captain of Preston Fire Company. His daily occupation at that time was that of painter and wallpaper hanger. About twenty-two years ago he was married to Misa Margaretta Bietch, a native of Preston. She has won considerable prominence as an expert needlewoman, having been awarded numerous first prizes for fancy needle work, at Toronto and other leading exhibitions of the Provinco. But Mrs. Stourmer's ambition does not end at fancy needle-work; she is also an expert in the culinary department, it being mainly through her instrumentality that the guests of the Crown Hotel are daily permitted to enjoy clean, palatable and wholesome meals, a feature that has given the house its good reputation.
