- OBITUARY - Another old settler whose death we record today has passed away in the person of Mary Dalgliesh, sister of the Messrs. Dalgliesh, of Galt. The subject of our notice emigrated with several junior members of the family from the vale of Yarrow, Selkirkshire, Scotland, in the year 1833. Arriving in Canada with a younger sister, she stayed for a season in Montreal as a domestic in the mause of the Revd. Mr. Black, Minister of the Scotch Kirk. The following season she removed to Galt, and its neighbourhood, where she continued to make her home for the most part of her allotted time in the western world. Possessed of no ordinary vigor and being very skillful as a cook, she was quite an acquisition to our young country and successfully filled places where her skill was brought into activity - such as in the cookery department of Osgood Hall, Toronto, where at that period the young members of the bar lodged. As a later period she filed the position of house keeper to the late William Dickson, Esq., of Galt, for the period of thirteen years, or until that gentleman broke up housekeeping in order to visit Europe. In later years, as age began to tell upon her vigorous frame, she had to withdraw from filling situations where large demands were made upon the energies. The extraordinary industry that she ever manifested enabled her to do much for the help of others, and her liberality in this respect was to a fault. In bringing our notice to a close, we may say that she suffered for some time before her death very much, bearing it all with Christian fortitude. She was buried on Saturday in Galt Cemetery.
