Notes |
- DAVID GUTHRIE, Superior Mills, was born in Canada in 1846; was brought up on a farm and worked at the business until 1878, when he came to Nebraska and went in company with his brother, who had put up the Superior Flouting Mills, the mill being about ready for business when he arrived. The mill was put up at a cost of about $20,000. One year afterward the dam washed away and they were at an extra expense of $1,500 to get it repaired, again, in 1881, the dam washed out in such a shape that they were obliged to change it and put in a race one and one-half miles in length, which cost about $9,000, and by so doing have at least a 500-horse-power, with only eighteen inches dam in river. Again, in the spring of 1882, the head-gate washed away and they were at an expense of $300 more to get the mill in running order, which they did in an exceedingly short time and think they have it in shape to withstand high water, and are making arrangements to put in another run of stone and a three-reeled bolting chest, and when it is completed it will make one of the most complete mills in the State. They are deserving of a great deal of praise for the determination which they have shown in their misfortunes, and Superior ought to be proud of such live and enterprising citizens. Mr. G. also owns an interest in a grocery store with another brother. He was married to Miss Jennet Brown in 1872. They have five children--Maggie, David, Jesse, Geanie, Ella. He is a member of the Presbyterian Church.
_______________________
HON. DAVID GUTHRIE, SUPERIOR, NEBRASKA,
AS the representative from the forty-third district. He was born of Scotch parents, in western Ontario, Canada, on a farm, in 1836. His early advantages were limited to the district schools, and he continued to farm in Ontario until he came to Superior, Nebraska, in 1878. He engaged in the milling business here, and still continues in it. Mr. Guthrie has been a member of the city council ever since the city was organized, and has been mayor for the past two years. He has not sought politics, but the people's independent party sent him to the legislature this session without regard to his preferences. Mr. Guthrie would much rather devote his time and attention to his private interests. He is a member of the committees on judiciary and public schools.
