Waterloo News Notes
MANLY SPORT.
It is greatly to the credit of the people of Berlin that they are always ready to give praise unstintingly, whether in success or defeat, to those of their young men who show marked skill in the manly athletic games and sports so general in Canada. We have all heard with pleasure of their athletes, the Forsyths, the Brubachers, the Gibsons and the effect of this upon the younger men has been wholesome indeed, in encouraging them, to emulate those who have won, distinction in the field of athletics. It is to be regretted that such has not always been the condition in our town and especially so of late years. We have our athletes, and, in proportion to our population, these are hardly surpassed by those of any other town in Canada. But they have not received fair treatment from a number of very, loud-mouthed critics whose conduct is injurious, to our games and sports. Happily, this crowd may not be very numerous, and yet press reports have emanated from this quarter that are in no wise the expression of a large number of citizens of Waterloo, who have nothing encouragement and praise for our boys, in success or defeat, when they do their best, receiving no pecuniary reward for their great efforts of skill, but engaged therein solely for the love of the games and to give pleasure to their follow citizens. To be more specific. Perhaps one of the best, of not the best, all-round athlete that our town has produced is Willard Hendry. Our town is noted for its success in manly sports. Who would not admit, that no one has contributed more to this success than Willard Hendry. Champions of baseball for a number of seasons, he playing short recently with the proficiency and brilliancy of a professional, and yet croakers say he plays for the Grand Stand. Nothing falser has ever been uttered and would not be repeated if they knew his true nature, which is directly opposed to sham of any kind. But a lie, too often repeated, becomes truth to some. Every player of any importance has a style of his own and when he does his best, without pecuniary reward, for the pleasure of the spectators, even chronic croakers should be satisfied. The same could be said of hockey. In lawn tennis, a game he has only played two seasons, young Hendry has few equals in the Twin City. In fact any game requiring great skill, he ranks high, stamping him at once as one of the best, if not the best all-round athlete in the Twin-City. Every inch a gentleman and always treating his opponents fairly, a very model as to manly conduct in games.
The press and the croaker can, in return, well afford to show a kindlier spirit to all our athletes and thus encourage their continuance in our manly sports, instead of foolishly driving them out of these games. If you can play the game better, you are the heap we're looking for, Come along, then we'll sign you, but it requires more than chin play to win the games.

OPENING OF THE WATERLOO MEMORIAL ARENA on Satuday will bring back memories to some of the more older hockey enthusiasts of teams in bygone days that brought fame to Waterloo. Probably the team that has been recalled the most was the aggregation of 1897-98 which won the Ontario Hockey Association's intermediate championship, only to have it taken away because an ineligible player was used. Members of that team were N. Clements, Joe Seagram, Grindy Forrester, Willard Hendry, Hookey Dickson, Ed Seagram, Charlie Koehler and George Bruce, manager, and Chris Clune, trainer. That was in the days when hockey players played 60 minutes and weaklings sat on the sidelines.
