Notes |
- SLOTA, Frank Michael - 86, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Sunday, July 27, 2008. Loving father of Mary Ann and Gary Middleton, Michael and Brenna Slota, and Sandra Bester. Beloved Grandad of Meaghan (Ben) and Emily (Kyle) Middleton, Trevor (Lynn), Shawn (Jordene) and Tarah (Robbie) Slota, and Michael (Stephanie) and Laura Bester. Great Grandad to Dylan, Jacob and Emma Slota, and Agnes, Duncan, Meghan, and Adam Bester. Frank led a very full and colourful life. He was a member of the world renowned 427 Lion Squadron of the R.C.A.F., flying two tours of Germany during the Second World War. He was recruited to the K-W area to play inter-county baseball and hockey in the early 1950s. Frank will be remembered best as one of the most colourful referees of the OHL, officiating across Ontario when players such as Bobby Hull, Stan Makita and Bobby Orr were playing junior hockey. Dad also refereed numerous Memorial and Allen Cup Finals during his hockey career. At some of the arenas, as many fans came to see dad referee as did to watch the game! Frank was the first referee to be awarded the prestigious Gold Stick in 1977, as well as holding the title of Referee in Chief for the league prior to his retirement. Frank was also an avid golfer and longtime member of Rockway Golf Course. He and mom won numerous Married Couple and Best Ball Tournaments, but his proudest moment was winning the 1972 Father and Son "A" Championship with 17 year old Michael. Frank was employed for 40 years as the Maintenance Supervisor for Electrohome Ltd. Frank will be remembered as the Dad who had all the answers and was always there to listen. He was the man who could fix anything and build everything. Frank was an amazing Grandad who doted on all his grandchildren and helped to shape them into the loving, caring young adults that they are today. At Frank's request, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. As expressions of sympathy, donations in memory of Frank may be made to the Food Bank of Waterloo Region through the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home , 171 King St. S. Waterloo, 519-745-8445 or www.erbgood.com.
