The family moved to San Diego, California in 1896, thence to Lyons, N.Y. in 1900. In 1902 he entered the preparatory school of Northwestern College, Watertown, Wisconsin, to graduate with his B.A. in 1908. His education continued for the winter semester in Kropp (Schleswig Holstein) Seminary and the summer semester of 1909 at the University of Halle, Germany. The next two years at the Philadelphia Seminary led to ordination at the hand of the Ministerium of Pennsylvania on June 11, 1911, when he was not yet 21 years of age. Subsequent to his first pastorate at St. John's Church, Shenandoah, Pa., 1911-1915, he matriculated at the University of Berlin in 1915 and Marburg University, Germany, in 1916, then served as pastor of Trinity Church, Philadelphia, Pa., from 1916 to 1918, when he was called to St. Matthew's Church, Kitchener. Serving the wider interests of his church, Rev. Schmieder was a member of the Board of Governors of Waterloo College and Seminary for 19 years and Chairman of the Board for 10 years. In recognition of his work the University of Western Ontario conferred on him the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity.
