John Grant - born in Scotland December 15, 1834, died on his homestead in Germfask Township, Michigan, October 22, 1901. He is buried in Ackley Cemetery. He was twice married. His first wife was Harriett Green, oldest daughter of Cyrus and Mary Ann Green of Wilmot Township, Waterloo County, Ontario, Canada. They were married about 1855. His first wife (Green) died in West Zorra, Ontario April 1, 1875. On February 7, 1878 Mr. Grant married Susan Bossing at Berlin (now Kitchener) Canada. Susan Bossing Grant died in 1936 in Royal Oak, Michigan.
Children of John Grant and Haniett Green \endash Twelve (12): Herbert, Mary Ann, Elizabeth, Jennie Matilda, William, Cyrus, John, ???? and Mable (twins), Isaac and Diana (twins), Harriett.
Children of John Grant and Susan Bossing ---Ten 10): George, Rosetta, Louise, Charlotte, Winifred,Gertrude, Olive, Fred, Bernice and Nelson. John Grant came to Canada at age 4. His parents died at sea.. Mr. and Mrs. Patton (Patten), adopted John who retained the name Grant. John was given a good education and was prepared to teach school. He was gifted in music which gift he transmitted to his son, William Grant, who later organized and lead the Germfask band. Mr. and Mrs. Patten wished John to continue teaching school, but he always wanted to farm. With his wife and children, he moved to West Zorra Canada and started farming. It was here that Harriet Green Grant died.A few years later, accompanied by his wife and two children, Nelson and Rosetta, they left Berlin (now Kitchener) in the fall of 1880.
