HESPELER. May 5 - Bernhardt Goebel 82 died at his home. Cooper Street, yesterday afternoon following an illness of several months. A son of the late Mr and Mrs. George Goebel, he was born in Waterloo Township near the Speed four mill. He earned his trade as blacksmith in Hespeler where he served his apprenticeship with the late J N Cober.
In September 1880 he married Miss Louisa Bucholtz and last year they marked their 61st wedding anniversary. Four years after his marriage he moved to Galt. Later he resided 113 Brantford, Essex County and returning to Hespeler In 1918. On his return here he was employed at the W A. Kribs Co. plant and by the Universal Lightning Rod Co for a few years. In 1921 he purchased the blacksmith shop on Cooper street which he operated until a few months ago when all health forced his retirement.
Mr. Goebel was an elder of St James. Lutheran Church. He also took an active interest in municipal affairs and served on the Town Council from 1928 to 1934, inclusive.
He as survived by his wife, three brothers, George and William Goebel of Toronto and John R. Goebel of Hespeler and one sister, Mrs. Nora Sizer of Hespeler.
The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon with a private service at the home at 1:40 o'clock and 3 public service at St. James' Lutheran church at 2.30 o'clock. Interment will be in the Hespeler Cemetery. The remains will be the Stager and Co. Funeral Chapel, Queen Street West, Hespeler, until tomorrow morning.
