- KING, Donald Joseph "Sky"-Donald Joseph King, 71, passed away suddenly, on Wednesday Oct. 30, 2002, of a heart attack.
He is survived by his wife, Diane and his children, Mark and Val King, Michele and Cal Steven, Raymond and Tammy King and Anne and Mike Rogers. He is fondly remembered by his 10 grandchildren, Ryan, Devon, and Jordan King, Erica and Rachel Steven, Joshua and Samantha King and Justine, Matthew and Tyler Rogers; brother of Mary Strode and Eileen McMullin.
Donald is predeceased by his father, Michael and mother, Eileen King (nee O'Donnell); his brothers, Bernard, Michael (Tommy), Rev. Raymond King, his brother-in-law Allen and sister-in-law, Bea.
Don's barbershop was a fixture on the main street of Elmira for over 40 years. Many stories and a fair share of famous faces passed through "Sky's" doors over the years. Don was well known in the sporting community of Elmira. A founding member of the Elmira Sugar Kings, Sky could usually be found at the arena while his good friend Gerry Forler guided the Sugar Kings on the ice. Don was also active with the Elmira Polar Kings and was President of the North Waterloo Softball League. Don loved hockey but his passion was baseball. He lived and died for the successes and failures of his beloved Blue Jays. When his speed on the base paths slowed, he started an Old timers, slo-pitch team appropriately named the "Sky Kings".
Don was an active member of the sporting community on other levels, he was involved in the arena fundraising committees as well as a past member of the Woolwich Recreation Committee. Don was often known to dispense sage political advice to the myriad gentlemen who would attend the "King's Court" on a Saturday afternoon at the "shop". He will be fondly remembered.
At Don's request, cremation has taken place. A memorial visitation for family and friends will be Friday, Nov. 1 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Dreisinger Funeral Home, Elmira. A memorial mass will take place on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 10: 30 a.m. at St. Teresa of Avila RC Church, Elmira.
