Notes |
- David Williamson with his wife Sarah Lynch, came to Manitou lin Island (Ontario, Canada) in 1880, from the Ayr district in North Dumfries Township of Southern Ontario. With them was their family of three boys, James,William and David - a babe in arms. David Sr. was a son of James Williamson and his wife Anne Calder who came to Canada from Scotland an d may have originally settled in Caledonia.
When David and Sarah embarked from Owen Sound, they landed at Manitowaning and were driven by cart to Van Zant's Landing. From there they went by boat across Lake Manitou, to Lehman's Landing - where Sid Cox presently lives. By then Sarah would have liked a cup of tea but none was forth coming. They then walked - probably the forest trail about 3 miles to John Caddel's house on Lake Mindemoya. Mrs. Caddel was David's sister. Sarah carried the baby, David, in her arms all the way.
It is known that they lived in a log cabin on what is now Jack Seabrook's farm and Andrew was born there in 1883, also probably Walter, Mary and Harry.
In 1892 they purchased from Frank and Elizabeth Wagg, the Colin Wagg farm and the Williamson family still owns this farm. Harold and Peter run the farm now.
This settlement was known then as Hopetown and was the site of the first fall fair in 1883 in Mindemoya. For many years the Department of Agriculture used part of the farm as an Experimental Station under the care of Peter and Walter Williamson. David was a councillor for Canarvan Township and Peter served as Councillor and then Reeve from 1949-1959 with another year as Councillor 1965-1966.

His son Harry was in from Alberta and the family had planned to attend a fair. To celebrate the occasion, David went into his cellar to get some of his homemade wine. He opened one of the bottles and sipped to see if it was ready for consumption. The bottle that he chose in that dark cellar was formaldehyde that resulted in his death.

Dear Friend:
I write you these few lines to let you know we all well at present hoping this will find you all the same. Our sterling is just about gone I was out all last week trying to collet some horse money but only got!. 0. They are all waiting to get their money for ties this has been a poor year. I haven't sold grain only a little wheat and some pork. Jim was here and took Prince. He traded me an old mare an d a two year old and a note he had against me $45. He called it $12.(?)
We have been on bad terms this good while trying to get a settlement but I have got rid of him at last and I hope it will be a long time until I get into his hands again I have $130 to pay right off for a mare I bought last spring and I have got to depend on horse money to pay it with and this devilish rent sent I wish I was done with it you will just have to take it as I can give it to you. I bought C Wagg farm I don't know if I will ever be able to pay for it or not if I do I will have the best farm in part I. Paid 2300 for it and he took mine for 800 and I move on a year from this spring you ought to let me put some rails on this f arm or you will never rent it to anyone else and I don' t think you will ever get more than $100 dollars for it again. I want you to tell me how much money I sent to you last May for I don't know for sure. I am sorry I haven't more to send and mother will look for so me I will send you $55, dollars in this letter and I don't think I can send you any more for a while. But I will try and sell some cattle or I took out some ties I may get a check from them and send it to you .
Dave has left me a piece to write we are all well at present but myself. I was over at Caddles yesterday to help Annie a little. They are all well. Annie gets along splendid . She does the baking and the washing like an old woman... .Sarah
I will have to finish this yet. I went away today and Sarah took sick and had a boy. When I got home Sarah Vincer, Mrs. Wagg and Mrs. McKendrick was here it only weighs 2 pounds. Tell Mrs. Lynch she is over it. We are glad. She has been bad all winter. I will have to stop and send this to the office. Mrs. Elliott is pretty bad just now. I will try and do the best I can.
David Williamson
