Notes |
- The Late Mrs. J. B. Walkem.
Augusta Betts, wife of Joseph B. Walkem, K.C., local master in chancery, passed away on Saturday morning at her residence, corner of Beverly and Union streets, She had been an invalid during the past eight years, and her death was not unexpected. The sincere sympathy of the community is offered to the bereaved husband and family.
The late Mrs. Walkem was a daughter of the late Dr. H. A. Betts, of "Calderwood." She was born in England, and came to Canada with her family in 1871. Possessing strong sympathies and generosity, she took an active interest in promoting charitable objects. She was a devout member of the Church of England, and took a prominent part in its many activities. While an accomplished musician, she was a great lover of other fine arts, and attained a high degree of proficiency in painting. Her china is known to a wide circle of friends for its beauty in color and design, making it a collection of rare value. But in the midst of her domestic and social activities she found time to extend her influence to other matters, and was associated with the late Mrs. R. T. Walkem on the board of the Orphans Home for many years until failing health obliged her to withdraw She held a high place in the esteem of all classes in the city with whom she came in contact and her death is the occasion for many expressions of regret.
Besides her husband, she is survived by one son, Lient. Harry Walkem, M.C., C.E., late of the C. E. F., and resident engineer at Petawawa; two brothers, H. A. Betts, of this city, who is an invalid, and F. B. Betts, "K.C.. of London, Ont., and one sister, Miss Maud Betis, who has always resided with her, and most devoted was in her attentions throughout the period of her illness. The funeral is to take place to St. John's Church, Portsmouth, on Tuesday.
