    • "City Named for Him" Kitchener Radke Dies

Kitchener (Babe) Radke of RR 1, New Hamburg, who used to tell people a city had been named after him, died Saturday at K-W Hospital after a brief illness. He was 54.

"I was born a year before Berlin's name was changed to Kitchener in 1916," he used to say. But it was the nicknames that were too much at times. "The kids called me London or Waterloo," he said in an interview with The Record last year.

"When I was born on year after the Great War started, A scribe for the Hespeler paper, who knew my father well, bet him that I'd be named after Lord Kitchener rather than Kaiser Wilhelm."

He was born Aug 4, 1915, in Kossuth, Ont., a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Radke, and had lived in the Kitchener area all his life.

Mr. Radke was a truck driver and has worked four years for Kraus Carpet Mills Ltd. He was a member of First Baptist Church, New Dundee.

Surviving are his wife, the former Myria Bosomworth whom he married Oct. 11, 1956, in Elmira; two sons, Radford and Kitchener, Jr., and one daughter, Christine, all at home; three brothers, Emery Radke, New Dundee, and Ivan and Robert, both of RR 1, New Dundee; one sister, Mrs. Lorraine Smith, Toronto.

He was predeceased by one brother, Alfred.

The body will be at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home until 11 am Thursday when removal will be made to the First Baptist Church, New Dundee, for service at 2:30 pm. Rev. G. W. Medley will officiate. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, New Dundee.

Donations to the building fund of the church will be accepted as expressions of sympathy.
