- Former Galt Lady Shoots Son of Legislator
Carroll, Man., Feb. 20.- Interest here to the strange shooting of F. H. Carroll, son of F. H. Carroll, M.P. P., who was nearly assassinated by Lettie McCulloch, formerly a domestic in the employ of the Carrolls, continues unabated. Miss McCulloch is under arrest at Souris, where she was conveyed immediately after the shooting, but when she was arraigned in the Police Court yesterday, she was not asked to plead, and made no statement. Her examination has been adjourned, pending developments in the condition of Carroll. No other cause. has been assigned except jealousy for the mad act of the young girl, but, nevertheless, it has created a great sensation. It appears that she had left the employ of the Carroll household about two months ago, after having been there two years, during which, she became infatuated with young Carroll. He got married a week ago in Winnipeg to a young lady of this district, and had just returned from a brief wedding trip when the shooting occurred. The McCulloch girl returned suddenly from Brandon and went to stay at a neighbor of Carroll's. About 7.30 on Friday evening, while Carroll and the rest of the family and his bride. were sitting in the house, he was called to the door, and the family were startled to hear two shots in rapid succession. Rushing out they found the young man lying on the door-step, terribly wounded, with bullet through his abdomen and an other through one hand. Word was telephoned to his father, who was in the Legislature in Winnipeg, and he came out by special train, bringing a surgeen and nurses with him.. The bullet, which was 38 calibre, was found in the young man's back, and was extracted. He is expected to recover. The girl who did the shooting is about 22 years of age. and came west from the vicinity of Galt, Ont. She seems almost crazen by some overwhelming grief, and steadfastly refuses to divulge any motive for the crime.
